This semester in Writing 220 we each had to choose a single piece of writing to experiment on three times. We were tasked with finding inspiration enough in that original work to transform it in three radically different ways.  The piece of writing I chose to work from is a line from a personal journal that reads “you are good to climb on—sustained trauma. February 2, 2017. 11:58 pm.” The line does not follow the chronological entries in my journal, and I don’t have any memory of writing such a line. Because of this, or in spite of it, I am interested in this line of text. It’s clearly something that I wrote because it’s in my handwriting and it is clear that it’s about something specific, or else I wouldn’t have put the date and time on it. I am also interested in the specificity and succinctness of the line—it presents so many loaded possibilities in such a short time. I want to explore themes it might bring up such as permanence, change, memory, and stress.
